We love helping Florida business owners and building managers get inspired for their commercial construction and renovation projects. If you’ve been looking to build or renovate your workplace for hybrid work, we’ve got some ideas based on design-build best practices.
What the Best Hybrid Office Spaces Have in Common
The best hybrid office floor plans are highly versatile. They offer diverse “zones” for different tasks, giving teams access to collaboration areas and/or quiet zones as needed. These offices also have ample space and integration capabilities for tech, so remote employees can have a seamless virtual connection with the rest of their team (Zoom booths, U-shaped meeting tables with smart cameras).
A few key design elements these spaces have in common might include flexible, reservable desks (for hot-desking), social hubs, tech-enabled meeting rooms, and a variety of settings to support comfortable “deep focus” and collaborative teamwork. Even though every brand is unique, successful hybrid companies have some common design principles.
- They offer lots of options, so employees have autonomy in where and how they choose to work.
- They promote the workplace culture in their look, feel, and layout. For example, a workplace that is highly collaborative includes lots of areas where teams and groups can meet and work. A workplace that prizes innovation and ingenuity might have lots of high-tech whiteboards throughout its space.
- They want people who work in their space to feel comfortable, relaxed, and encouraged to do their best work.
Zones Your Hybrid Office Might Include
Incorporating activity-based zones creates distinct areas for different work styles. Your floor plan could include collaboration hubs (areas where groups can work on projects together), quiet zones (individual or small group work pods, similar to a private study room or desk in a library). Don’t forget to include zones for people to take breaks and connect with their teammates. Depending on the size of your company, this could be as simple as a small lounge or as large as a corporate cafeteria or fitness center.
Trying to visualize it? One hybrid office layout we’ve seen frequently in commercial construction includes a central “town square” for large gatherings. This area is surrounded by team “neighborhoods” with reservable desks for hot-desking. Those team neighborhoods are bordered by quiet focus pods (for individual work) on one side and social/relaxation areas on the other.
Tech Integrations and Other Considerations
Tech-enabled spaces are essential to bridge the gap between remote and on-site work. When planning for energy efficiency, keep your tech needs in mind. You might include video conferencing booths or hybrid meeting rooms in your floor plan. You may need an area with auditorium seating for all-hands meetings and presentations. Whatever you want to include, think of ways it could be multi-purpose, so there’s no waste of resources or space. If you account for a variety of seating configurations and work styles, you should be able to get a lot of great use out of your hybrid office.
